Loh Mee 卤面 RM3.00 (small) |
One of the oldest hawker stall in Penang - the Loh bak stall.
Since he was 12 years old in 1965, this uncle has been selling loh bak for over 55 years.
Loh Bak is made of meat roll flavoured with five spices and wrapped with layer of bean curd sheet.
Usually, patrons of Seng Thor Coffee Shop that order Loh Mee will also Loh Bak. The way of eating Loh Mee together with Loh Bak has its roots all the way to Fujian Province, China.Freshly fried loh bak pieces are hot. Fujian people eat them by first, dipping them into the gravy of Loh Mee to cool them down. And, this eating habit was passed down when they came here.
Since most Loh Mee stalls don't sell Loh Bak, Loh Bak stalls in Penang will provide the gravy of Loh Mee. Other places that sell Loh Bak will usually provide chilli sauce. Only in Penang, you will find Loh Bak with chilli sauce and also Loh卤.
The original Loh Bak from Fujian is called 炸五香肉卷 (literally, fried spiced meat roll). While the name Loh Bak 卤肉 is actually referring to pork belly in Loh卤 gravy. In the 50's and 60's in Penang, people were still calling it 炸五香肉卷 but later on Penangites starting to named it Loh Bak卤肉 because the Loh 卤 refers to the gravy and the Bak肉 refers to the meat rolls.
The shop next to Kedai Kopi Seng Thor sells some kuih. The Siew Bao looked deliciously nice. It's RM1.30 for one. |
